Youth shot dead in Munshiganj

A 22-year-old was shot dead allegedly over previous enmity for local dominance in Mollakandi union of Munshiganj Sadar upazila last night.

The deceased is Tuhin Dewan of South Beherkandi village, said police.

The incident took place around 9:30pm near Munshikandi Government Primary School, said police and witnesses.

According to Tuhin's cousin, Akash Dewan, who was present at the scene, Tuhin went out of his house for an evening walk when the attackers ambushed him near the school. "They first hurled a crude bomb and then opened fire targeting Tuhin. He collapsed on the spot," Akash told local journalists.

Locals rushed the critically injured Tuhin to Munshiganj General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Pranto Sardar, the on-duty physician at the hospital's emergency department, said the youth had died before being brought in. "There were multiple gunshot wounds on his back and neck," he added.

Saiful Alam, officer-in-charge of Munshiganj Sadar Police Station, said the killing appeared to be linked to a long-standing local feud.

"It's not a political murder. There has been an ongoing dispute between residents of Beherkandi and Munshikandi villages over local dominance," he said, adding that police are investigating the incident.

Contacted, Masud Rana, member secretary of Munshiganj district Jubo Dal, also denied any political angle to the killing.

"The incident is the result of an old rivalry between two local groups. No faction of the BNP is involved," he said.
