A video showing an officer-in-charge carrying goods on his head to save those from a fire in a cotton warehouse in Gazipur has gone viral on social media.

The video shows the OC moving cotton to a safe place, earning widespread praise online. Locals said that without the quick response of the fire service and the efforts of the police, the damage could have been much worse.

The fire broke out on Sunday noon in a cotton warehouse owned by Abdur Rahman in the Mazukhan area of Kudab Paschim Para, causing panic in the vicinity.

Upon receiving the alert, three units of Tongi Fire Service rushed to the spot and worked to control the blaze, which was fully contained by 2:30pm.

Senior Station Officer Md Shahin Alam of Tongi Fire Service told The Daily Star that their swift action helped recover goods worth around Tk 50 lakh. He added that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

He confirmed that there were no casualties or injuries, as the godown was closed at the time of the incident.

Shahin said Pubail Police Station OC Molla Md Khalid Hossain was at the scene and assisted locals in controlling the fire.

OC Khalid Hossain told The Daily Star, "Before the fire service arrived, the fire was spreading rapidly in the warehouse. Seeing the situation, I carried a sack on my head and moved it to safety. Seeing this, the locals also got encouraged and came forward. This helped prevent major damage to neighbouring houses."
