Unidentified assailants set fire to a parked bus early today (17 November) in Chattogram's Patenga area, causing significant damage. The arson attack occurred after 1:30am in the GM Gate area of Patenga, a location where around 40 buses are typically parked overnight before operating local routes during the day.
Kazi Muhammad Sultan Ahsan Uddin, officer-in-charge (OC) of Patenga Police Station, confirmed the matter to The Business Standard, stating that the attackers set the bus alight after 1:30am.
"The passenger seats, constituting about one-third of the bus, were burned. No one has been arrested in connection with the incident," the OC said, adding that the bus owner is preparing to file a formal complaint with the station.
The incident comes as the International Crimes Tribunal prepares to deliver a high-stakes verdict today against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two other key figures of her previous administration. In anticipation of the verdict, the now-banned Awami League has announced a "lockdown" programme and vowed to resist the judgment against the party chief.
