A parked passenger bus was set on fire early today (17 November) on the Dhaka–Narayanganj Link Road, with officials saying efforts are underway to identify those responsible.
The incident occurred around 1:30am, when locals noticed flames coming from an Allah Vorosha bus in the district council area. They immediately alerted the police and fire service.
According to Narayanganj Fire Service Senior Station Officer Shahjahan Mia, the bus was used to transport workers of Russel Garments and had been parked on the roadside, with the driver and helper asleep inside.
"They noticed flames near the driver's seat and began efforts to put it out. The fire service was informed right away. However, locals managed to bring the fire under control before our units arrived, preventing major damage," he said.
Although parts of the interior were damaged, no casualties were reported.
Additional Superintendent of Police Tarek Al Mehdi said attempts are being made to trace those responsible, adding that the perpetrators fled after setting the vehicle on fire and "will be brought under the law".
Similar arson attacks on parked vehicles have occurred in several areas nationwide in recent days, including Dhaka, Narayanganj, Savar and Gazipur.
