Police have arrested a National Citizen Party member and another youth after they allegedly pressed a pistol to a schoolboy's head during an altercation in Rangpur's Park Mor yesterday.
Ragib Hasnain, 30, NCP Rangpur Metropolitan Coordination Committee member, and Rakibul Islam alias Tushar, 28, were detained by locals and handed to police around 8:00pm.
Shahjahan Ali, officer-in-charge (OC) of Rangpur Metropolitan Police's Tajhat Police Station, confirmed this morning that the victim's father Asaduzzaman Goni filed a case naming four individuals and 10-12 unidentified persons on charges of threats and intimidation.
Police said two NCP leaders rushed to the police station to get them released.
RMP Deputy Commissioner (Crime) Tofayel Ahmed confirmed that the detainees had been shown arrested.
"The recovered weapon must undergo expert examination. If it is a functional firearm, an arms case will also be filed," he added.
A witness, requesting anonymity, said the incident began after an argument between two schoolboys in front of Kawsar Academy. "Later, Tushar, Ragib, and several others arrived at the scene when the situation escalated, and Tushar pulled a pistol from his waist and pressed it against one boy's head," the witness said.
Locals stepped in and handed Tushar and Ragib over to the police.
OC Shahjahan said forensic tests will determine if the weapon is functional.
Police are conducting drives to arrest other accused.
