A man identified as Shamshad was allegedly abducted and tortured by drug peddlers at Dhaka's Mohammadpur Geneva Camp yesterday for reportedly sharing information on drug trade with the army.
Shamshad, an assistant to the area manager of Rupali Business Centre, an internet service provider, was picked up from the Aziz Mahalla area around 3:00pm by a group led by Rubel and Mostak, said his elder brother, Meraz.
Mafiz Uddin, inspector (operations) of Mohammadpur Police Station, told The Daily Star that they had received a complaint regarding the incident and that an investigation is underway.
He was taken to a room in the C Block of Geneva Camp, where he was allegedly beaten severely. "My brother was beaten for around one and a half hours by Munna, Azam, Tanvir, Istiaq, Palash and Shumon," Meraz claimed.
After learning of Shamshad's location, Meraz went to the camp with a police team, but the accused had already moved after being tipped off about the police presence. He then sought assistance from a nearby army camp.
Around 5:00pm, Shamshad was found outside the camp, injured, Meraz said.
Quoting his brother, he said Shamshad managed to flee the room where he was held, took shelter in another house inside the camp, and later left the area disguised in a burqa with the help of residents.
Shamshad, a father of two, is currently receiving treatment at home, he added.
