A Jubo Dal leader was shot dead by assailants in Dhaka's Pallabi area this evening.
The deceased has been identified as Golam Kibria, member secretary of Jubo Dal's Pallabi thana unit.
The shooting occurred around 6:40pm near Block C of Pallabi.
Kibria's body was later taken to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College.
In CCTV footage, three men wearing helmets were seen entering a hardware shop where Golam Kibria was present. They opened fire on him and then fled the scene.
Confirming the incident and the deceased's identity, Maksedur Rahman, deputy commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Mirpur Division, told The Daily Star that one suspect has been detained and an investigation is underway.
Following the killing of Kibria, an auto-rickshaw driver named Md Arif, 20, was injured in gunfire.
Around 9:15pm, Arif was brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
Md Piarul Islam, a passer-by who took him to the hospital, said, "Arif is an auto-rickshaw driver. At the time of the incident, he was on the road between Section C Block and A Block in Mirpur 11. Two helmet-wearing men boarded his auto-rickshaw and ordered him to drive fast. They threatened to shoot if he did not comply. As he started driving, one of them shot him in the back before fleeing."
Arif lives in T Block of Mirpur Section 12.
Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of the police camp at Dhaka Medical College Hospital's emergency department, confirmed the incident. He said, "The injured man was brought from Pallabi after being shot. There is a bullet wound on his back. He is receiving treatment at the emergency department."
