Hawker stabbed to death on Ekota Express in Thakurgaon

A hawker was stabbed to death allegedly by two other hawkers on the Panchagarh-bound Ekota Express from Dhaka at Pirganj Railway Station in Thakurgaon last night.

The deceased, Al Amin, 30, was of Charbadhuatholi village in Ulipur upazila of Kurigram, said police.

Quoting witnesses, Abdul Aziz, station master of Pirganj Railway Station, said the Panchagarh-bound train reached the station around 9:00pm. During the stopover, Al Amin, a hawker who sold popcorn, got into an altercation with another hawker selling coconuts inside a train compartment.

At one stage, the coconut seller, with the help of another hawker, stabbed Al Amin repeatedly with a sharp knife, leaving him critically injured.

Locals rescued him and took him to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

Confirming the incident, Tajul Islam, officer-in-charge of Pirganj Police Station, told The Daily Star over the phone that police suspect two hawkers from Thakurgaon to be involved with the incident.

Railway police in Dinajpur have started investigating the killing.

Abdul Mannan, officer-in-charge of Dinajpur Railway Police Station, said the body was being taken to Dinajpur for autopsy, adding that necessary legal procedures are underway.
