The Ministry of Home Affairs has reprimanded Superintendent of Police Kanai Lal Sarker, former chief of Industrial Police-6 and currently posted at the In-Service Training Centre in Netrakona, over allegations of misappropriating 4,230 litres of government fuel by submitting fraudulent bills for vehicle duty.
A ministry order issued on 19 November, signed by Senior Secretary Nasimul Gani, said Kanai Lal Sarker, who served as police superintendent of Industrial Police-6 in Khulna from 1 September 2022 to 4 December 2024, failed to exercise proper supervision over the Mechanical Transport section.
During his tenure, SI (armed) Md Mamunur Rashid, ASI (armed) Abdullah, and Constable Matiur Rahman allegedly kept official vehicle logbooks in their personal custody instead of handing them to drivers or keeping them with the vehicles. They allegedly showed fabricated long-distance duties, withdrew excess fuel, and created false bill vouchers by using duty in-charge officers' signatures — sometimes forged and sometimes collected through deception.
According to the order, the officers worked together to illegally withdraw 4,230.46 litres of additional fuel and misappropriate Tk4,86,851.25. As unit chief, Sarker did not investigate the misconduct, failed to take disciplinary action, and showed negligence in controlling and supervising his subordinates. A departmental case was filed against him, and he was asked to explain his conduct.
He submitted his response on 24 April 2025 and requested a personal hearing, which took place on 14 May 2025.
Following the hearing, and after reviewing the allegations, his written response, statements from both sides, and relevant documents, Superintendent of Police Md Fayez Ahmed, deputy commandant of RRF Police Lines in Khulna, was appointed as the inquiry officer.
In his investigation report, the inquiry officer concluded that Sarker failed to properly supervise the use of vehicle logbooks, verify signatures and mileage, and oversee the preparation of fuel bills and vouchers, amounting to negligence in duty.
Based on these findings, the Ministry of Home Affairs imposed a formal "reprimand" on Kanai Lal Sarker.
