George R R Martin has confirmed that the "Game of Thrones" universe is set to expand once again — this time with multiple sequels in active development. The author shared the update during a session at the 2025 Iceland Noir Festival, according to international media reports.
Speaking about the future of Westeros on screen, Martin said that alongside the previously announced prequels "House of the Dragon" and "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms", five or six additional spin-offs are currently being worked on. "Apart from 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' and 'House of the Dragon', there are other spinoff projects in development," he said. "Most are prequels… and yes, there's a sequel or two as well."
Martin did not specify whether the sequels would be television series or feature films, but noted that he is developing the new titles with multiple collaborators rather than writing alone.
The revelation has reignited long-standing speculation about an Arya Stark follow-up. Maisie Williams's character sailed west of Westeros in the much-debated Season 8 finale — a storyline fans have frequently cited as ripe for further exploration.
The original "Game of Thrones", adapted from Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels, premiered in 2011 and quickly became one of HBO's defining global hits. Spanning Westeros and Essos, the series charted power struggles for the Iron Throne, Daenerys Targaryen's quest to reclaim her family's legacy, and the Night's Watch facing threats from beyond the Wall.
Martin has previously confirmed that three animated shows set in the same universe are also in development, signalling HBO's long-term commitment to expanding the franchise. The network recently announced fresh seasons of its two existing spin-offs — "House of the Dragon" and "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" — with more Westerosi stories expected to unfold over the next several years.
