Large parts of Narayanganj -- including BSCIC, Fatullah, Kashipur, Enayetnagar, Deobhog, Masdair, and Isdair -- have been without gas for more than two days after a pipeline damage during piling work on the Panchabati-Muktarpur flyover.
The outage began on Saturday evening when Titas Gas's main supply line was damaged in the Shashongaon area. Titas shut off the supply immediately to prevent any major accident. Although low-pressure gas supply briefly returned on Sunday morning, it was halted again to carry out repairs.
Talking about the difficulties, Mithu Bhuiyan of Amlapara said, "We haven't been able to light the stove for two days. I've had to buy meals for my four-member family every time."
Misti Begum of Jamtala said she has been cooking on a wood-fired stove since Saturday evening, while Kulsum Begum of Kashipur has relied on an electric cooker.
Industries have also been hit hard. Shihab Uddin Ahmed, senior DGM of Rahman Garments, said gas pressure began dropping on November 22. "Our dyeing section remained completely shut on November 23 and 24. We lost around 36 tonnes of production in two days. The ironing section was also closed; only the sewing section operated," he said.
Moshiur Rahman, manager of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Limited in Siddhirganj, said repair work began immediately after the rupture. On Sunday, crews dug 25 feet below ground to expose the damaged section, and by Monday, heavy steel plates were set around the area to prevent soil collapse. "Repair work on the damaged segment is underway. We hope to restore gas supply very soon," he added.
Officials noted this is not the first such incident, as pipelines have been damaged multiple times during work on the flyover project, requiring emergency repairs.
