Ex-NBR official Matiur denied bail in graft cases

A Dhaka court today (24 November) denied bail petitions filed by former National Board of Revenue (NBR) official Matiur Rahman in two separate cases, accusing him of amassing wealth beyond known income sources.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Faiz passed the order after hearing the bail petitions.

Matiur's lawyers sought bail in both Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) cases, while the ACC opposed the petitions. After hearing both sides, the court rejected bail in the two separate cases.

Confirming the development, ACC lawyer Ishtiaq Ahmed said, "During the bail hearing, we stated that Matiur, being a government officer, accumulated massive wealth. His children have also become owners of illegal assets through his money.

"He was involved in laundering money abroad. There are allegations against him related to the stock market scam. For these reasons, we opposed the bail," he added.

On 6 January, the ACC filed a case against Matiur's wife Laila Kaniz on charges of accumulating Tk13.15 crore wealth illegally. She was also accused of concealing information regarding assets worth Tk1.53 crore.

The case alleges that Matiur Rahman assisted her in acquiring these assets, leading to his inclusion as an accused.

The second case was filed on 19 December 2024. In this case, Matiur is accused of amassing Tk5.28 crore in illegal wealth and concealing information regarding assets worth Tk1.27 crore.

The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Matiur and his wife Laila Kaniz in the city's Bashundhara area on 14 January this year. They have since been in custody, with remand orders issued in multiple cases.

Matiur became a subject of controversy last year due to an expensive sacrificial goat booked by his son.
