Pressure is intensifying on India vice-captain Shubman Gill as his poor T20 form in the ongoing India-South Africa series draws sharp scrutiny from former players.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan warned that Gill's struggles could threaten his spot unless he rediscovers his best.
"The runs not coming from Gill's bat is a bad sign and increases the pressure on him and the team management," Pathan was quoted as saying by Times of India after Gill managed just four and zero in the first two T20Is against the Proteas.
Pathan also urged that Samson should be mentally ready to step in if Gill fails to turn things around. "Gill will score runs if he sticks to his own game plan… If he keeps thinking there's another player waiting, it will be trouble," he added.
Former India batter Mohammed Kaif echoed the call for change, arguing that the time has come to rest Gill in favour of a naturally aggressive option.
"Sanju Samson is a top-quality player; he hasn't received enough chances," Kaif was quoted by Indian Express. He urged selectors to avoid "double standards" and consider Samson's strong opening form in recent seasons.
Kaif pointed to Gill's dismissals and heavy workload across formats, adding: "Responsibilities should be given gradually."
Despite the pressure, India management has kept faith in Gill, who is fit and available for the series.
The third T20I of the series will take place today in Dharamsala. The series right now is level at 1-1.
