DU officials, students hand over deputy registrar to police over Facebook post on Hasina's verdict

A deputy registrar of Dhaka University (DU) was detained and handed over to the police in the early hours today (18 November) after posting a remark on Facebook regarding the death sentence awarded to ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

In the post, Muhammad Lovelu Mollah shared a photo card featuring Hasina along with the caption "I Don't Care" and the political slogan "Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu" of the activities-banned Awami League.

A group of students and DU officials handed him over to the police after many on social media heavily criticised the post, calling it a direct opposition to the International Crimes Tribunal's (ICT) verdict sentencing Hasina to death for crimes against humanity committed during last year's July Uprising..

Confirming the development, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Khalid Monsur told The Business Standard this morning, "He [Lovelu] posted on Facebook opposing the death sentence verdict of Sheikh Hasina. The [DU] proctorial team and students brought him to the station around 1:30am."

The OC also noted that Mollah is expected to be produced before a court later today. A case filing related to the incident is currently being processed.

The deputy registrar was apprehended by a group of students and the university's proctorial team and subsequently taken to Shahbagh Police Station around midnight.

Lovelu is a former president of the now-banned Bangladesh Chhatra League's Masterda Surja Sen Hall unit of the university and is a former vice-president of its central committee.

The ICT, yesterday (17 November), sentenced Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for their roles in the deadly crackdown on protesters during the uprising.
