Dhaka sees 20 murders on average each month: DMP

Dhaka Metropolitan Police have recorded at least 198 murders in the capital over the past 10 months, a figure the force describes as "within a tolerable range" given the city's size and socio-economic realities.

Talebur Rahman, deputy commissioner of DMP's Media and Public Relations Division, shared the data with The Daily Star this afternoon.

"On average, around 20 murder-related crimes occur each month. These include cases stemming from family disputes, previous enmity, dominance establishing, and even the recovery of bodies of unidentified newborns—each of which leads to the filing of a murder case," he said.

He added that detectives have solved most recent murder cases and brought those involved under the purview of the law.

"Considering Dhaka's population and socio-economic dynamics, the number of incidents is at a manageable level. We are successfully uncovering the motives behind most cases and arresting the perpetrators," the DC said.

Meanwhile, at least three people, including a top-listed criminal and a Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal leader, were shot dead with illegal firearms in Dhaka over the last eight days.

Last night, Golam Kibria, member secretary of Jubo Dal's Pallabi thana unit, was gunned down in the city's Pallabi area.

Police said they are conducting a detailed investigation into the killing. Officials said the process of identifying the assailants and the firearms used in the attack has begun.
