Dhaka–Mymensingh highway has been blocked for about three hours following a road accident in the Hurricane area of Gazipur, leaving commuters stuck in long tailbacks.
The incident occurred around 8:30 pm this evening, when a vehicle ran over a pedestrian crossing the highway, severely injuring his legs.
According to police sources, locals rescued the victim and immediately rushed him to a hospital.
In protest, agitated people took to the highway, stopping all traffic and demanding action. The blockade caused a massive traffic jam, leading to suffering for passengers and drivers.
Law enforcement agencies rushed to the spot to bring the situation under control. At 10:45 pm, Inspector Md Shafiq of Gazipur Traffic Police told The Daily Star, "The accident occurred when a speeding car hit a pedestrian in the Hurricane area. Locals then took up positions on the highway and blocked traffic."
Aminul Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Gazipur Metropolitan Gacha Police Station, said, "We are talking to locals and efforts are being made to normalise the situation."
As of filing this report at 12:00 pm, traffic was still at a standstill as the army reached there to resolve the situation.
