BNP activists and supporters blocked parts of Shariatpur and Kushtia over the denial of nomination of their respective leaders.
In Shariatpur, supporters of BNP leader Sajjad Hossain Lavlu Siddique, who was denied the party's nomination, blocked the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway for nearly two hours last night.
At the time, protesters set tyres on fire and staged demonstrations after learning that Kamal Zaman Molla had been nominated by the BNP for the Madaripur-1 constituency.
The demonstration began around 8:00pm at the Panchchar intersection in Shibchar upazila, causing severe traffic congestion on both sides of the expressway. The protest ended at around 10:45pm following the intervention of Shibchar Highway Police, local police, and army personnel, after which vehicular movement gradually returned to normal, Inspector Zahirul Islam of Shibchar Highway Police told The Daily Star over the phone around 10:00pm.
Meanwhile, in Kushtia, supporters of former BNP MP of Kushtia-3 (Sadar) constituency Sohrab Uddin protested by blocking the road.
They started protesting on the road at Mozampur Gate in the town by burning tyres around 9:00pm.
The protesters said that Sohrab Uddin has long served as the general secretary of the district BNP. They claimed that not nominating him "was an injustice".
They called for reconsideration of the decision and urged that Sohrab Uddin be nominated to contest the next national election.
Police went to the scene to bring the situation under control.
