Death toll in Jamalpur drowning rises to five

Bodies of all five children who drowned while bathing in the Jhinai River in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur have been recovered.

The body of 12-year-old Baishakhi was found floating in the river this morning.

According to the Fire Service and local sources, her body was found about 1 km downstream from the site of the incident in Char Bhattiani area and later recovered by locals.

Baishakhi was the daughter of Hossain Ali of Tangalia village in Nakla upazila of Sherpur.

Bodies of four children were recovered on Saturday and Friday.

They were -- Abu Hasan, 7, and his sister Mariam, 11, children of expatriate Bangladeshi Dudu Mia from Char Bhattiani; Kulsum, 8, daughter of Azad from Kajiyabari; and Saira Akter Nourin, 9, daughter of Nur Islam from Bausi area in Sarishabari upazila.

Madarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saifullah Saif said Baishakhi had come to visit her grandparents' house in Char Bhattiani on October 30. The next afternoon, she went to bathe in the Jhinai river with other children. While one child, Yasin, managed to swim ashore, the other five went missing.

Upon receiving the news, divers from the Fire Service launched a rescue operation and recovered three bodies on Friday evening. Kulsum's body was found the next morning.

Mariya Begum, mother of deceased Abu Hasan and Mariam, said in tears, "How will I live after losing both my children?"

OC Saifullah said police are investigating the incident. As the families did not file any complaints, the bodies were handed over without autopsy.
