CU student Mamun undergoes successful skull replacement surgery

Chittagong University (CU) student Mamun Mia, who sustained a life-threatening head injury during a violent clash with villagers on August 30, has successfully undergone skull replacement surgery at a private hospital in Chattogram.

The operation was performed on Saturday by Dr Ismail Hossain, Assistant Professor of the Neurosurgery Department at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH). The surgery took place at Park View Hospital, where Mamun had been receiving treatment since the incident.

Mamun was among at least 500 students injured in the violent confrontation between CU students and local villagers. Due to the severity of his injury, part of his skull had to be removed and preserved. For weeks, he wore a bandage marked with the warning "No bones, do not press" to prevent accidental pressure on his exposed head.

Confirming the outcome, Dr Ismail Hossain told The Daily Star: "There are always some complications following surgery, which is why we did not publicly disclose the news immediately. However, the operation was successful. Both Mamun and another injured student are expected to be discharged within a day or two."

Dr ATM Rezaul Karim, managing director of Park View Hospital, said that Imtiaz Ahmed, 24, a master's student in the International Relations Department at CU, who was also severely injured in the same clash, has now fully recovered and is awaiting discharge.
