Crimes against humanity: Ex-home minister Asaduzzaman gets death penalty

The International Crimes Tribunal today sentenced former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July uprising last year.

He was found guilty for his role in the killing of six people in Chankharpul, Dhaka and six others in Ashulia, Savar.

According to the judgement, Asaduzzaman is liable for "abetting and failing to prevent" the atrocities, as well as failing to take necessary preventive and punitive measures during both incidents.

The tribunal said his actions, and inaction, directly contributed to the commission of the crimes.

The court ruled that in both occurrences, Asaduzzaman committed four counts of crimes against humanity through his abetment and failure to act.

"For all these four counts, we have decided to award a single sentence of death to Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal," the tribunal announced while delivering the verdict.

Regarding another accused, former IGP Abdullah Al-Mamun, the tribunal noted that he had provided "full and true disclosure" of the circumstances within his knowledge during the trial.

Deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina was also sentenced to death in the case.
