The Election Commission (EC) on Monday (15 December) said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin takes the gun attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, seriously and has directed relevant agencies to take firm and immediate measures to bring the perpetrators to book.
The EC made the statement in response to reports circulating in various media outlets and social media, citing the CEC's remarks he made while inaugurating a Youth Voter Festival in the city's Gulshan area in the morning.
According to the EC, the CEC has taken the attack on Hadi, an independent aspirant from Dhaka-8 constituency, with utmost importance.
To this end, an emergency meeting was held on Sunday at 4:00pm with top officials of law enforcement agencies, during which the CEC directed strict measures to ensure the attackers are brought to justice swiftly and instructed steps to prevent such incidents in the future.
The CEC also emphasised that the attack on Hadi will not impact the upcoming elections.
The Election Commission hoped the clarification would end any misunderstandings regarding the CEC's earlier statement.
The commission wished Sharif Osman Hadi a speedy recovery and expressed their deepest condolences to his family.
