Buet student sent to jail over 'religiously offensive remarks' on social media

A Dhaka court today sent Buet student Sreeshant Roy to jail in a case filed under the Cyber Security Ordinance (CSO) over alleged obscene and religiously offensive remarks on social media.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after police produced him before the court, a court staffer confirmed.

Earlier in the day, Buet security officer Afgan Hossain filed a case against Sreeshant, a student of Electrical and Electronic Engineering department, accusing him of posting obscene comments against Muslim women and derogatory remarks about Islam on Reddit.

According to the case statement, Sreeshant allegedly posted offensive comments about Muslim women and Islam between June 8 and September 7. The complaint said his remarks "hurt the religious sentiments of devout Muslims and members of the Buet community."

On Tuesday night, around 10:30pm, Afgan and Buet students held Sreeshant at Ahsan Ullah Hall after screenshots of his remarks went viral, sparking widespread outrage and protests on campus. He was later handed over to Chawkbazar Police Station.

Following the protest on campus, Buet authorities suspended him from the university the same night.
