BNP has appointed Brig Gen (retd) AKM Shamsul Islam as "chief security officer" to ensure the overall security of the party's Chairperson Khaleda Zia and acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
The decision was announced today in a statement signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
According to the statement, Shamsul will coordinate all security arrangements for Khaleda and Tarique and ensure that necessary measures are taken.
Meanwhile, BNP has formed a reception committee ahead of Tarique's return to the country.
The committee, formed on Monday, is headed by Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed as convener, while Rizvi will serve as member secretary, party sources said.
BNP's Media Cell also confirmed the development to The Daily Star today. They said the committee includes the party's 10 divisional organising secretaries, the presidents and general secretaries of its affiliated bodies, and the convener and member secretary of BNP's Dhaka North and South City units.
