‘Bhasane Ujan' brings solo rendition of Dostoevsky’s 'The Gentle Spirit' to the stage

Vivekananda Theatre is set to premiere its 25th production, "Bhasane Ujan", a new stage adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky's "The Gentle Spirit".

The production opens on November 21 at 7pm at Studio Theatre Hall, with Mohammad Ershad Hasan performing the work as a solo actor. The adaptation is written by Apurbo Kumar Kundu and directed by Shubhashish Dutta Tanmoy.

The play examines four central tensions of contemporary life: mounting pressures, psychological unrest, fragile relationships and profound isolation. Through these elements, "Bhasane Ujan" presents a tightly focused portrait of an individual wrestling with conscience and existential doubt.

By placing Dostoevsky's psychological concerns within a modern frame, the production aims to make the novelist's themes accessible to today's audience without compromising their depth.

Director Shubhashish Dutta Tanmoy describes the production as "a challenging and singular creative journey," crediting the combination of Dostoevsky's inherent psychological intensity, Kundu's adaptation and Ershad Hasan's solo performance for shaping its direction. "We hope the play opens new doors to thought, feeling and self-examination for our audience," he said.

Playwright Apurbo Kumar Kundu notes that the drama is driven by a single question: can a person genuinely become—and remain—good? "That inquiry lies at the heart of 'Bhasane Ujan,'" he said. He added that Hasan's experience and restraint as a performer will bring this moral tension into sharper focus.

The creative team features stage and lighting design by Palash Hendry Sen, music direction by Hamidur Rahman Pappu, costumes by Enam Tara Saki and choreography by Robin Basak.
