Bajus announces new exec committee; Enamul Haque elected president unopposed

Bangladesh Jewellers Association (Bajus) today (3 November) announced its 35-member executive committee for the 2025–26 and 2026–27 terms. Enamul Haque Khan, owner of Diamond & Divas Jewellery, was elected as the new president, running unopposed.

The entire 35-member committee, including one senior vice president, three vice presidents, one treasurer, and 29 directors, was elected uncontested. This marks a historic change for Bajus, as the post of general secretary has been abolished for the first time since the association's establishment, meaning no one was elected to that role.

The final results were announced at the Bajus central office in Moghbazar by its Election Board Chairperson Nasrin Fatema Auwal. She expressed optimism, stating, "The current Bajus committee will be even more successful than the previous one."

The new leadership includes Ranjit Ghosh (owner of Sananda Jewellers Limited) as senior vice president, with Azad Ahmed, Abhi Roy, and Iqbal Hossain Chowdhury chosen as vice presidents. Amit Ghosh will serve as treasurer. The committee is expected to officially assume office by 15 December.

In his first remarks as President, Enamul Haque Khan strongly distanced legitimate gold traders from illegal activities, stating, "No genuine gold trader is a smuggler."

He pledged the committee would work to simplify gold import procedures, which he described as currently being so complex that they make legal imports economically unattractive.

Until the import issues are resolved, he vowed to continue pushing for the reinstatement of baggage rules to facilitate easier gold entry.

Furthermore, he committed to advocating for a reduction of VAT on gold, pointing out that VAT in Bangladesh is higher than in India (2%), and pledging to work towards reducing the local rate to 1.5%.
