48,000 police personnel receive training on election duty so far

Some 48,134 police personnel across the country have so far received election-related training with the next national parliamentary election approaching in February.

The training programme, inaugurated on September 7 by Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, will continue until mid-January, says a press release of Police Headquarters.

This is the first time an extensive nationwide training programme has been organised for police personnel ahead of the national polls, following widespread criticism of the force's role in previous elections held under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

There were widespread allegations that many police members assigned to polling centre security even assisted in stuffing ballots overnight during the 2018 general election.

The government has formed a committee to investigate allegations of corruption, irregularities, and criminal activities in the three national elections held in 2014, 2018, and 2024.

Against this backdrop, Bangladesh Police have intensified training programmes to enhance the professionalism, efficiency, and preparedness of officers assigned to election duties.

Earlier, from August 31 to September 2, a "Training of Trainers" course was held to prepare master trainers, who are now conducting sessions nationwide.

Around 1.5 lakh police officers are expected to be deployed at the field level during the polls. Their activities will be closely monitored both at home and abroad, according to a press release.

The core objective of the training is to ensure that every officer performs their duties with discipline, neutrality, and professionalism. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) has issued special instructions to all unit chiefs to supervise the ongoing training activities, it added.

Police have said they are committed to ensuring an inclusive, free, fair, and festive election environment across the country.
