Tomorrow, 15 December 2025, marks the 16th death anniversary of eminent educationist and social worker Quazi Azher Ali.
Quazi Azher Ali was a former secretary to the government, founding chairman and honorary vice-chancellor of Bangladesh University, and founder of Mohammadpur Preparatory School & College, along with several other educational institutions. He passed away on this day in 2009 at Bangladesh Medical College Hospital.
On the occasion of his death anniversary, his grave at Banani graveyard will be visited at 10:00am. Milad and doa mahfil will be held, along with the distribution of food among orphans. In addition, Quran khani and doa mahfil will be organised at Bangladesh University.
Quazi Azher Ali joined the then Pakistan Civil Service (CSP) in 1959. He obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge and served in various administrative positions, including sub-divisional officer, additional deputy commissioner, deputy commissioner and secretary in several ministries, including the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Education.
During the Pakistan period, he worked in different ways to uphold the legal rights and demands of the oppressed and neglected Bangali population.
After the country's independence in 1971, his involvement in philanthropic activities increased significantly. Serving as secretary to six ministries under different governments, including military regimes, he played an important role in policy formulation and implementation in the national interest.
As chairman of the Rural Electrification Board, his contribution to expanding rural electrification across the country, from Teknaf to Tetulia, is widely regarded as outstanding.
